ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

ICANN is a non-profit corporation located in Marina Del Rey, California, United States. It was created on September 18, 1998 in order to oversee a number of Internet-related tasks. ICANN took over these tasks from other organizations such as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

ICANN have the responsibility for IP address space allocation. Every website on the Internet has a unique address (domain name). Domain names are linked to IP addresses on the server where the website you request is hosted.

IP stands for Internet Protocol.

Domain names are useful because IP addresses are hard to remember. They allow humans to memorize many website domain names without having to learn the IP addresses.
